Web Design - Less Is More

By: jason ciment

Lots of internet sites nowadays try to achieve the look of television shows. They use high level visuals and audio on their pages. What these firms don't seem to recognize is that their audience is not in fact viewing television.
For those with high speed internet connections, this really works. Most of the people who look at websites can only see a site on a screen that is 15 to 19 inches wide, and can only see 216 colors. 28.8 is the usual speed that a page can load. If you are a web design professional, you should keep a design checklist that will list all of the elements of successful websites. These elements include visual appeal, content, speed, layout, readability, and ease of navigation.
When you web design certain things should be followed. Always make sure you are on a 28.8 connection type in the URL for your web page, hit enter, and hold your breath. If you required gasping for air before the page was fully down loaded you really need to cut down on the size of the page. When you web design, the web page should be no larger then 50K. If possible try to shoot for less than 30K. It is seen that the number one visited web site home page is fewer than 21k.
Keep all graphic images as small as possible when you web design. Make them smaller than 4k. Going up to 6k is ok. When designing a graphic for the web site keep in mind the number of colors used. 216 is the number of colors that is available on the color pallet. Always use solid colors when designing the image.
Use design more and graphics less. For a web page to be successful it has to download quickly and look good. Instead of designing graphics and taking pictures and turning them into jpg to make the web page look good, use color schemes. Try to use cell colors to make boarders. Also use the negative space on your web site. Understand that what is not there is just as important as what is there. Always remember sometimes less is more.
Web site design can make or break your website. Users want certain things. If the design of you site can meet or exceed those needs, users will come back again and again. Perhaps they are interested in the visual aspects. Other might be focusing of the information offered only. Knowing your audience means your design will be better tailored for them. Trying to make your site meet the needs of every person surfing the net will only result in a page that is slow and takes a long time to download since it will contain many needless components.
