Watch Out For Disturbing Backdoor Santas

By: Isaiah Henry

As a child you were told to behave well throughout the year because Santa is watching you. Santa had elves everywhere reporting your every misdeed and good deeds to Santa. Well, Santa is watching you even now. This time its not his elf but Backdoor Santa. Backdoor Santa is watching your every move on the internet.

This is because Backdoor Santa is a Malware (bad program) on your computer and gives you no reason to celebrate its presence. Although like the real Santa, the Backdoor Santa is also keeping an eye on your behavior, on the internet. It is like a spy noting down your internet activities.

We all hear of Trojans right? Well backdoor Santas are no different from them. Technically, they are like intruders that can create havoc to our computers and though they may not be considered a serious threat, no one will ever know. But you should not even wait until the threat escalates from minor to high risk. Backdoor Santas are not categorized as spyware for nothing.

Backdoor Santa will not give you any ads, or popups, nothing to indicate that it is on your computer. What then gives away its presence? Toolbars attached with your internet browser is where you should look for it. How your toolbars behave when you do internet searches or browsing is the key. Toolbars like Alexa and Hotbar are two examples of Backdoor Santa.

Once Backdoor Santa downloads through bad toolbars, they begin keeping a watch on all your internet activities. They view and report (to remotely placed controlling programs) your browsing activities. Your net behavior is studied and analyzed. Then, they start directing your internet searches to websites they want you to see and visit. This is why they are installed on your computer in the first place, to modify your internet behavior to benefit the installers.

Just when you thought that anti-virus software was all you need, mischievous programs such as the backdoor Santas call for actual specialized spyware software today to fight off their presence and potential threat.

Anti-virus programs are not sufficient. While some cannot even trace their presence, even the anti-virus programs we usually have installed may not even help to disinfect or get rid of them since they are programmed for virus problems only.

There are a lot of people today who frequent the web and while people could care less, URL loggers are the other means of tracking the sites you visited online. Normally, they are stored in your temp folder and this includes even images of the sites, something like taking snapshots of them. This is perhaps because there may be times you would want to access the same site and to easily show them would be something better to do if the cookies and files are already on your workstation.

You can try to prevent this by setting your cookie filter to stop third party cookies from downloading. This will not get rid of Backdoor Santa though.

Each activity you do with your computer is crucial. Just when you think that you are free from harm, spyware such as this backdoor Santas may indeed give you a surprise. Unfortunately this surprise is something you will not really be happy about.
